Spot On or Not On — Respect your elders!

Thursday, 28 May, 2009

ac-dcAC/DC: “Anything Goes” I swear, the next critic that complains about every AC/DC song sounding the same should get a clip in the teeth. Formulaic or not, you just can’t argue with the combination of sandpaper-like vocals, bluesy power chords, animated lead guitar, thudding eighth notes on the bass and metronomic, no-frills, no-fills drumming that just makes you just want to bang your head and rock out. It’s genius, and it’s worked since 1974. And yeah, yeah, I know these guys are hurtling toward retirement age. Who cares? They still rock! Spot On!

Asher Roth: “I Love College” Gotta love that “I’m nice right now” spoken intro. I also somehow think that the drunken stutter immediately afterward is real. If that’s the case, well, perfect! The funky instrumentation is superb - especially the wah-wahed lead guitar fills - and I must give Asher props for doing his own thing and not trying to jump on any particular bandwagon. The somewhat literary tone to these accessible lyrics show that Mr. Roth has a knack for observation and storytelling on par with Ray Davies and skillfully captures the mood of a campus bash vividly enough to remind me of the stories my brother told me about his days at Vassar. Spot On!

Vick is back in the NFL

Wednesday, 27 May, 2009

Michael Vick was released on March 20, 2009 after serving 21 months in jail. Vick plead guilty in August of 2007 to a federal charge of bank rolling a dog fight operation in his Virginia home. In December 2007, he was sentenced to serve a 23 month federal prison term; 3 years of prison time in Virginia on other charges was suspended upon condition of good behavior. With loss of his substantial NFL and product endorsement income, Vick filed for Chapter 11 reorganization bankruptcy protection in July 2008, with liabilities of $20.5 million and assets of $16 million. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank Santoro said the plan requested up to $1 million in cash to paid to creditors but did not believe Vick could immediately produce that amount of money in a short amount of time. Santoro suggested that Vick should do away with two houses and three cars he intended to keep in the rejected proposal. Read the rest of this entry »

I love her…I love her not.

Tuesday, 26 May, 2009

onemoretimeYou either love her or hate her. You may have seen her cuteness on the Mickey Mouse Club. At the young and naïve age of 16, she became not only a pop star, but also a sex symbol. She was one of the lucky girls to date Justin Timberlake. And, her life slowly went downhill after meeting a guy who changed her life for the worse. She is the famous Britney Spears!!!

The interesting thing that I have noticed is about 95% of the guys I know hate her, and about half of the girls either love her or hate her. I asked a few people what they think about Britney and here are some of the quotes (the first two are from guys and the last two are from girls). Some are really harsh! Read the rest of this entry »

Misty’s Top Box Office Chart!

Tuesday, 19 May, 2009

movie-chartTo see if movies are hits or fails, I often read movie reviews. But, I have also picked up a faster way…it’s looking at top box office charts. I think it is a good way to pick a movie when I am on the rush. It isn’t as accurate as reading a movie review, but I just compare how many weeks it has been in office with how many weeks it has been released. I usually go on yahoo or box office mojo to look at the most recent charts; I compared it with others, and they pretty much look exactly alike. Since I really like the organization and efficiency of the charts…and to me they are interesting to read, I decided to make my own Top Box Office Chart based upon the most recent weekend Friday May 15, 2009 - Sunday May 17, 2009.

Of these top 10, I chose 3 I definitely want to see…and here is why. Read the rest of this entry »

Spot On or Not On — It’s for your own good!

Thursday, 14 May, 2009

rise-againstRise Against: “Hero Of War” Of all the songs I have reviewed, this is probably the most poignant and haunting and captures the spirit of the times all too well. The exceptionally straight-forward lyrics, rife with unsettling imagery capture the horrors of war as effectively as Margaret Bourke-White’s photos from World War II and Korea, and Zach Blair’s interpretation of them, set to excellent acoustic guitar will put a chill up and down anyone’s spine, particularly since we are still not quite out of the shadow of the Bush Administration’s atrocities in the Middle East. Spot on!

Oasis: “Falling Down”
It’s been over a decade since these guys were first massively popular and it’s reassuring to know that after ten years, my patented low boredom threshold still works. Everybody harshed on them for ripping off the Beatles, especially George and Ringo, and this hunk of recycled, generic, forgettable, made-to-order psychedelia that borrows heavily from “Tomorrow Never Knows” shows that nothing has changed. It even comes with a pretentious Alexander Pope reference at no extra charge. Here’s your rock stars, folks. Fetch. Not on! Read the rest of this entry »

The Real Life Pac-Man

Wednesday, 13 May, 2009

Manny Pacquiao, the pride of the Philippines, is a beast. He is the best pound for pound fighter in the world and holds titles as the WBC Lightweight World Champion, WBC Super Featherweight World Champion,IBF Super Bantamweight World Champion, and WBC Flyweight World Champion. Manny has many nicknames all earned by his relentless punishment. He is the Pac-Man, The Destroyer, The Mexi-cutioner, The Mexican Assassin, The People’s Champion, Pambansang Kamao (The National Fist). Manny Pacquiao has become one risen to the top in a matter of months. He is fresh off of two big wins versus Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton. Manny Pacquiao is the first Filipino and Asian fighter to win a title in five weight classes.

Manny Pacquiao has become one of the biggest names in boxing after defeating Oscar De La Hoya, a future hall of famer, and Ricky Hatton. Pacquiao’s road to domination started when he was 16. Pacquiao went pro when he was sixteen and his first major fight was against Mexican boxing legend, Marco Antonio Barrera. barrera-pacquiaoHe fought Barrera twice and defeated him both times. Manny Pacquiao was on his way to earning the name “The Mexi-cutioner”. He faced Erik Morales three times and defeated him two out of three times and lost in a 12 round unanimous decision. Pacquiao won the tie breaker between the two with a knockout in the third round. Pacquiao also fought another Mexican boxer, Juan Manuel Marquez, and lost one and won one, both being disputed split decisions.

Pacquiao’s rise to the top has come within the last couple of months. On December 6, 2008, Pacquiao faced Oscar De La Hoya at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a fight called Dream Match. Pacquiao dominated De La Hoya from the first round till the eighth round. De La Hoya’s corner had no choice but to throw in the towel before the start of the 9th round. Pacquiao won via technical knockout. Pacquiao then went on to fight Ricky Hatton. Pacquiao started the fight strong, knocking down a sluggish, overconfident Hatton twice in the first round. At the bell, Hatton seemed to have re-grouped, he was holding his own until he was knocked out by a vicious left hook by Pacquiao with 2:59 into the second round, awarding Pacquiao the win by KO. HATTON GETS KNOCKED OUT!

Brain Food - What to eat for finals

Tuesday, 12 May, 2009

School is coming to an end, which means finals are coming up. Us students are starting to stress out and study harder…and of course, stay up for some last minute or procrastinated studying. By the time we need to actually take our finals, most of us are very tired and sleepy. But we can prevent that, while improving our study skills and test scores. What we eat can affect our body and mind; it is very important to feed our brain good foods (which I call brain food). Thankfully, there are certain foods to help us concentrate, stay alert, and have the energy we need.

Here is my top 5 list of brain foods:

Blueberries1. Fresh blueberries: These fruits are extremely high in antioxidants, which means they help get rid of free radicals that can cause cancer. But these are good to eat because they can help improve and increase memory and other cognitive skills. In the long run, blueberries can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Other berries, such as strawberries, cherries and blackberries also have these similar benefits, but blueberries have the most.

Bananas2. Bananas: Bananas are a good source of B vitamins. B vitamins can help your body release energy. B vitamins are also found in energy drinks, which can sometimes give a crash. Healthy ways to get these vitamins are not only by eating bananas, but also potatoes, lentils, and beans.B vitamins are also found in energy drinks, which can sometimes give a crash. 2009 NFL Draft Review

Wednesday, 6 May, 2009

The Radio City Music Hall was packed with anxious fans, nervous college football stars, and critical football analysts. The 2009 NFL Draft was full of surprises, especially on the first day. The first surprise was when the New York Jets, who had the first-round 17th pick, traded up for the Cleveland Browns first-round 5th pick and drafted USC quarterback Mark Sanchez. The Jets traded the Browns their 17th pick and 52nd pick plus DE Kenyon Coleman, QB Brett Ratliff and DB Abram Elam; however the Jets and their fans felt like they acquired the better trade.jetsfans Sanchez stole all the limelight from, Georgia quarterback, Matthew Stafford especially after, the supposedly overrated, Stafford was booed as he was selected first by the Detroit Lions. Both quarterbacks are destined to take the reins early on in their career, so we will see who was the better pick.

The next big surprise came from the Oakland Raiders when they made two controversial picks in the first and second round of the draft. The Raiders had the first-round 7th pick and the second-round 15th pick. The Raiders were in need of explosive, play making receivers like Michael Crabtree, who was the best receiver in the draft and was available at the time, however Al Davis had something else in mind. 2009 Superhero Movies!

Tuesday, 5 May, 2009

In the action/adventure movie genres, some of the most popular stories are based upon super heroes or comic books. Last year was a big hit and earned loads of cash in the movie industry. The hits were The Dark Knight ($155.5 million for its opening weekend), Iron Man ($100.8 million), Hancock ($66 million), and The Incredible Hulk ($48.7 million). For 2009, this years movies are Watchmen ($55.6 million), X-Men Origins:Wolverine ($35 million) and the upcoming ones are G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

1. Watchmen

watchmen_poster16jpg

Actors: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Good, Jackie Earle Haley.

Release date: March 6, 2009

Director: Zack Snyder

Watchmen was based upon a graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. This movie brings out an artistic appeal. It is set in an alternate universe in 1985, during Nixon’s presidency. The world’s biggest threat is nuclear war with the Soviet Union, and the only superheroes that are not outlawed by the government to use their “powers” are Dr. Manhattan and The Comedian. However, there is also a mysterious man trying to kill each of the superheroes.

I saw this movie after hearing all the hype about it. I either heard bad reviews or extremely good ones. I ended up not liking the movie and the people who liked it told me it was because I did not understand it. That was absolutely not the case! There was just way too much going on at once. Yes, the story was very interesting, but it was VERY boring to watch.

2. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Actors: Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Dominic Monaghan

Release Date: May 1, 2009

Director: Gain Hood

The second Super Hero film this year; this movie is centered on Marvel’s Wolverine. It’s a prequel to the X-Men Trilogy. The movie tells about Wolverine’s (Hugh Jackman’s) past, revenge against Victor Creed, and the Weapon X program. Wolverine came out last Friday, and I have not seen it yet. But, I have heard bad reviews on the bootleg version, and I have heard mix reviews about the actual movie. I guess I will have to see for myself! :)
