College Textbook Buy Back Sites: What to Look For
The number of college textbook buy back sites continues to increase, with both good and not-so-good companies competing for your business. It is important to know what to look for – and who you can trust.
Doing Business Online
Using a college textbook buy back site, like dealing with any company over the internet can present certain risks. And yet, millions of people complete online transactions every day without incident. The key is to only do business with those businesses that show themselves to be the most trustworthy. Be selective. When choosing a textbook buy back site, it’s important to look for both good signs and red flags that will let you know whether a site is worthy of your trust.
Who Are They Really?
Be wary of college textbook buy back sites that tell you little or nothing about their company. One warning sign is having no company name beyond their URL. If you are dealing with a legit business, you should be able to find a company name that you can check against the Better Business Bureau.
Other bad signs include having no physical address listed on their site and/or no phone number. You should probably also be suspicious if no information is given about the people who run their service and if there are no pictures of them or their facility.
If a company is legitimate, they should be able to stand behind their service and let you know who they are, where they are, how to contact them, etc. If a company is hiding this kind of information, it indicates that they might not be totally legit, that they may have something to hide, and that they are generally not the kind of business you probably want to do business with.
Evaluating Their Claims
You should also be suspicious if every user testimonial posted on their site is glowingly positive. College textbook buy back, like any other business, will have some percentage of unsatisfied customers. It might be a very small percentage, but no matter how well they run their business, every once in a while mistakes will occasionally be made, packages will be delayed in the mail etc. If 100% of their customer reviews are gushingly positive, they are either a statistical anomaly or more likely, they are hiding something.
Likewise, if every piece of feedback on their site is perfectly worded, you might want to be more skeptical of it. Think about feedback you’ve seen written on other sites. People have different levels of writing ability, and even many who can write well don’t take the time to craft an eloquent, grammatically flawless piece of writing for an online review. If their feedback doesn’t seem to you like it was written by real people, there’s a good chance that you’re right and that they are at best cherry-picking the comments they show or worse, making them up.
Balancing Choice and Risk
The internet is a double edged sword. It provides us with a huge amount of choice, whether you're looking for textbook buyback sites or pictures of cute kittens. However, the internet also gives people and businesses the power to cloak themselves in anonymity, and to portray themselves any way they choose. This doesn’t mean you should never do business with anyone online, it just means you should be aware, alert and careful. Fortunately, all the information you need to spot a less than honest business is usually right there on their site, whether it’s what they aren’t willing to tell you, or a suspicious way they portray themselves. Be smart when you're selling college textbooks. Be a discerning consumer, do your homework and choose the company you’re most comfortable doing business with.
